Art Advice - How to find the perfect match

Pairing art is something of an artform in itself, and a kind of interior styling where you can get expressive and have a lot of fun. By making a connection through color, mood or expression, you can find a dynamic duo that will create a vibrant dialogue in your space. A little contrast here can be a very good thing, and there’s no need to automatically assume you need to match the frames and passepartouts.

Here, our Art Advisor, Sanna, gives you some concrete tips on how to successfully pair artworks. This can be a great solution for a forgotten corner, or something you want to take up space in one of the premium spots in your home.

Here are five steps to finding the perfect pair.

1 Find a common thread.

The key in finding pieces that hang well together is to make sure there’s a common thread. It could be a color, it could be a texture or perhaps it’s the mood of the piece or a small detail. By ensuring there is some connection between the pieces you can make the space feel sophisticated and thought through.

2. Create contrast

Don’t, however, assume that you need to follow the same style in matching your pair. Sometimes creating a little friction here can be very effective: photography paired with a figurative painting or abstract together with a typography print. If your common thread is there, then varying the styles creates an exciting contrast.

3. Style beyond the art

Think about the other details in your space, from soft furnishings to decorative details like books, vases and or candlesticks. By carrying some of the colours from your art pair into the rest of your room you will create a cohesive and considered atmosphere.

4. Frame the connection

Frames don’t necessarily need to match. Sometimes the same passepartout with two different kinds of frame can be very effective. Contrast light with dark, metal with wood or pick our coloured frames that will elevate the selected artworks. Alternatively match the frames but pick out different passepartouts. Consider frames and passepartouts to be relevant parts of the styling.

5. Play with proportions

You might be picking out a pair, but that doesn’t mean they have to share a size. Sometimes pairing a larger piece with a smaller one can create a really interesting interaction between the two. This is especially true in fairly uniform spaces, where playing with proportions brings a different energy to the walls.

These ideas should help you to find a perfect pair that will elevate your space, inspire you and make your home feel a little more personal and dynamic. If you are still struggling to find the right art, did you know that we offer a custom Art Advice service?
