Behind the Scenes on the French Riviera: How Studio Soleil was Made

Every Desenio Studio Collection begins with a journey to a chosen destination, and Studio Soleil was no exception. Step behind the scenes to uncover the story of the production, the obstacles we encountered, the moments that pushed us further, and how it all came together to create the create the magic that is Studio Soleil.

At the end of last year, our in-house production team from the Stockholm Atelier travelled to the French Riviera to create what was to be a bright and sun-drenched summer collection. The beautiful photo art collection of over forty new photographs Studio Soleil brings sunny, retro glamour in your home.

The reality at the location, however, was far from a sunny Mediterranean dream. Upon arrival, the team was met with cold temperatures, strong winds and steady rain. Most memorably for our models, the pool water barely reached 10°C.

Despite the weather, the team spent long days using every trick in the book to conjure the feeling of endless summer: capturing poolside scenes and recreating sunlit moments. With clever lighting, brave models and skilled art direction, the chilly surroundings were transformed into vibrant, nostalgic photographs filled with endless warmth and light.

Several of the final photographs are the result of thoughtful creative composition. In Summer Height the diving board was photographed on its own, while the picture of the model standing was taken separately, on the edge of a cliff, by the roadside. The two images were later combined to create the final striking photo.

In Poolside Toast, what appears to be someone enjoying champagne by the pool is in fact a playful illusion: the champagne glasses were staged poolside. From another angle you would see a model soaked in bubbles beneath a table, holding the glasses over her head, pool behind. Professionalism sometimes involves getting soaked in fizz. On a more serious note, it is a perfect example of how imagination and creative illusions can produce amazing results.

Sourcing authentic retro props and styling details from carefully selected vintage stores prior to the trip was key to making sure the collection felt genuine. Every detail, from furniture and glassware to swimwear and accessories, was chosen to represent the right era. Precisely itemised and packed by the team, these details add an authenticity to the collection.

Before the trip, locations were meticulously scouted to ensure the Riviera atmosphere could be captured. Research on hair, make-up, clothing and accessories was undertaken to make sure every detail fully embodied the period.

Location shoots require resilience, creativity and a strong vision and our team never fails to deliver. On the French Riviera they excelled at turning a cold, wintry France into a glowing celebration of summer with Studio Soleil, a timeless photo art collection.
