Meet the Artist: Studio Vreeken

Studio Vreeken became a Featured Artist at Desenio in 2026, as part of Seasonal Editions: Golden Serenade. Her piece Cheers quickly topped the bestseller lists. We sat down with Sharon Vreeken, the artist behind Studio Vreeken to talk art, life and inspiration.

Sharon Vreeken’s road to becoming an artist

“For as long as I can remember, I drew and painted,” she begins. “I didn’t think making a living from my art was something that could happen, so I looked for jobs where I could be creative: I thought about fashion design or architecture. Then I graduated in Product Design and worked for a Dutch interior design brand, I worked mostly digitally but also started to paint, and that's how I got started painting again. “

Sharon works from a studio she found because her best friend lives upstairs. Every available wall space is covered with paintings, a clue to how productive Sharon is. During our conversation, the warm April sunshine was streaming in through the windows.
“My studio is not purpose-built, it’s an old shop,” she says, “it's really nice because people find me here, both people who know me and my work because I’ve lived here for ages, and people who find me through the shop front.”

Sharon is inspired by daily life, sometimes it can be a nice breakfast with her boyfriend that sparks the idea for a breakfast painting, and she follows interior trends closely. “Also, I like cowboy hats! I don’t know why. I started a cowboy hat brand once,” she laughs.

Studio Vreeken’s creative process

Sharon normally starts by sketching on an iPad, creating work on canvas once she is happy with the composition and colours. She paints with Amsterdam acrylics; the same paint used in our Stockholm Atelier. “The colours are so bright, and my brush is easy to clean. I never paint in old clothes, always in my good clothes so I can remove stains with water or put my clothes in the washing machine.”

“When I start painting, I am hyper focused and I don't hear anything around me. I put on music, I sing loud and have a lot of fun.”

Art that inspires joy and togetherness

That joy is something that comes through in all of Sharon’s work. She told us a little more about how Cheers came to be:
“I wanted to paint something with multiple people. Something had to be happening in the composition, and it was coming up to the Festive Season here in the Netherlands, so I thought let's make it something with wine or a champagne in the picture.”

“I also wanted to capture the Dutch spirit of gezellig.” Gezellig describes a social, fun and relaxed situation with friends, something that gives people a warm feeling of togetherness.
